Waterlogged

John Haywood

John Haywood is a Brighton-based watercolour artist. He is particularly inspired by the contre-jour approach of looking into the light, which causes a loss of detail and colour in favour of an emphasis on shapes and lines, and how this plays out across landscapes, city scenes, and interiors.

An energetic, bold directness characterises his approach to painting. The aim is not to create an exact representation but to evoke a distinctive sense of mood, drama, and atmosphere.

He is an elected member of the Sussex Watercolour Society. His work has been selected for the British Art Prize (2023), the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour (2023) and the Fabriano Watercolour Convention in Bologna representing England (2024, 2023 and 2022). He was named a top 200 World Winner in the International Watercolour Masters contest (2024) and received a top 200 merit award from the International Watercolour Masters for his ‘pursuit of excellence’ (2022).
