Standing Alone

Serena Sussex

Serena Sussex is a Brighton-based artist who has been painting professionally since 2005, working primarily in oils and mixed media on canvas. Inspired by nature, urban life, and water, her work captures the quiet wonder of everyday moments with a sense of tranquillity and gentle mystery.

Alongside her studio practice, Serena has created public artworks across Sussex. In 2024, her giant owl Twitchester Twoo appeared in The Big Hoot art trail in Chichester and Arundel, inspired by the stained-glass windows of Chichester Cathedral. She was also selected to design Bridget for the Shaun the Sheep trail in Brighton, supporting Martlets Hospice and inspired by artist Bridget Riley and the iconic Aardman character.

Earlier in her career, Serena painted live on the BBC and was selected from over 3,000 artists to take part in The Big Event in Trafalgar Square, recreating Holbein’s Henry VIII. Her work has also been voted a People’s Choice winner three times.
