Four Open Houses opening this weekend only – don’t miss them!

Sewing Collective at 92 Montpelier Road

1.  NickGardner&Co at Gallery40 – is a new Open House for Winter 2022 runs for the last four days of the Festival – 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th December.

As a veteran of four open houses, I am delighted to be joined by amazing ceramicist Thea Thompson who’s works were central to one of this year’s Gold prizewinning gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show  and multi-talented creative Rebecca Angel, who will be exhibiting an exciting new series of geometric collages made from up-cycled papers generated during her textile design process.

We have the Open Houses to thank largely for bringing us together for this show as we shared ideas and images of our work at the Art at 21 and the Rock, Rooks and Threads houses in May 2022. Both Rebecca and myself are based in Red Herring Studios overlooking the docks in Portslade whilst Thea works in sight of the sea in Hove.

Experience from diverse professional backgrounds brings richness to our collaboration. We were drawn to exhibit together partly through the contrasts between our backgrounds and our art – Rebecca from the textile fashion industry, including long periods working in New York and Italy, myself from boatbuilding, theatre and education and Thea whose aesthetic is drawn from her love of nature nurtured through her extensive practice as a landscape architect.

We are showing with the intention of exploring the tensions and similarities between differing media, starting and finishing points….Between the hard edges and geometric rhythms of Rebecca’s cut paper works and the textured, faceted and often craggy vessels that Thea has created, juxtaposed again with the lyrical oil paint and wax forms found in my paintings.

2.  92 Montpelier Road is delighted to be participating in the Winter Artists Open House for a fourth consecutive year. We are open for one weekend only, from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th of December 2022 (10 am to 6 pm), so don’t miss out!

This year, we will be exhibiting an exciting selection of work from eighteen emerging and award-winning locally based artists and makers, four of whom are new to 92 Montpelier Road, and all of whom are women. (Well, strictly speaking, work from two of their dads as well!)

Come and visit our 200 year-old house this weekend to meet some of these amazing women and see their work. You will be spoiled for choice with a range of products including spectacular pieces of fine art, Timorese-influenced jewellery, ceramics and candles with a Scandi touch, luxury leather bags, Indonesian treats, feather art, stained glass work, along with some items ready for on-the-spot personalization to set you up nicely for Christmas gifting.

Also new to 92 Montpelier Road this year, The Sewing Collective – a social enterprise and part of the Network of International Women for Brighton and Hove (https://niwbh.org.) – will be exhibiting and selling their beautiful products made from waste fabric. The Sewing Collective is currently partnering with ReFAB (https://www.kartikprabhu.org/refab-studio).

We hope to see you this coming weekend!
