Exiting Shoreham-by-Sea train station and heading towards the sea there is a bright store front, home to Shoreham Art Gallery. Inside this friendly shop is a great selection of original art and photography as well as gifts and home items. Upstairs is the studio of Elizabeth Anne Norris, jeweller and Christmas Open House Artist.
This is a new studio for Elizabeth, much larger than her past space, with a lovely mullioned window over her workspace. The softness of the wood tones of her work surfaces show off the elegance of her pieces as she carefully lays out some samples amongst the tools of her trade. Circle is a predominant shape. Little seed-like balls nestle in squares with rounded corners in a pair of earrings. More little balls of silver circle together creating a delicate necklace. Elizabeth is inspired by the shapes and textures of nature.
New this season Elizabeth finds new ideas beneath the sea; working with a new shape inspired by siphonophores, or less elegantly, sea slugs. Components for this new design are still taking shape, abstracting elements of this new fascination.
Her work in silver and gold combined with textures and enamel creates brilliant pieces that add a litle extravagance to the everyday. Each piece is crafted by hand and is finished to the highest standard. They stand out, adding glamour to everyday and elegance to an evening out.
This is Elizabeth’s third Christmas Open Houses Festival. It is a welcome opportunity for her to meet customers and take time to chat in a comfortable, festive atmosphere. “I really enjoy it! It’s also an affordable way to exhibit my work. The atmosphere at the AOH Christmas event is always fun and festive. We offer seasonal gifts as well as artwork. Our visitors really appreciate the unique locally made gifts whilst avoiding the busy high street.” Customers love her work, often coming back for more through the following weekends of the Christmas Festival or through her Etsy shop.
