Kelpie, Stoneware Bowl, lagoon glaze with sea glass, 35cm
Mimi Spencer
My hand-built stoneware pieces are inspired by the seashore, particularly the rugged coasts of north-west Scotland and the Outer Isles, and the softer sea-edge of my beloved hometown of Brighton. I have always found something joyful in beach pebbles – to me they not only have shape and weight, but histories, characters and stories to tell. I often use them as a form on which to build, but sometimes I use buoys found on the beach to create kinetic, rock-able shapes that seem pleasingly unanchored. This is the intention of my ceramics, to echo those organic shapes, textures and colours found along the beaches, dunes and foreshores, or in the shallows where the kelp begins and the light plays tricks.
Following a career as a fashion journalist, magazine editor and non-fiction author, I have for the last five years been making ceramics in Brighton and in Wester Ross, where the wind blows strong and some folk still believe in selkies.
