Landscape : Islands at Brighton Digital Festival 2016
An exploration in contemporary ceramics and sound
Landscape : Islands presents a unique international residency programme bringing together ceramic and sound artists to collaborate in the making of new work in response to ‘landscape’, in partnership with Phoenix Brighton.
The artists will be in residence at Phoenix Brighton and The Ceramic House throughout August and their joint works will be exhibited as part of Brighton Digital Festival at Phoenix Brighton, South Gallery from 1st-25th Sept. The project is curated by artist Kay Aplin, the founder of The Ceramic House and Joseph Young, co-founder of In Camera Gallery, a new space for contemporary sound and ceramics. Aplin & Young’s collaborative work ‘In A Shetland Landscape’ transfers from Shetland Museum in September, opening on Sept 2nd at In Camera accompanied by performances from sound artists Felicity Ford (AKA Knitsonik) and Cathy Lane.
A catalogue/artists book documenting the project and featuring critical essays by Paul Scott and Conall Gleeson will be published on September 1st, accompanied by a CD of ‘In A Shetland Landscape’, produced in collaboration with Portuguese netlabel Green Field Recordings.
In A Shetland Landscape is a collaborative installation inspired by the work of John Cage, titled after his famous composition ‘In A Landscape’. The exhibition explores the experience of being part of the landscape rather than simply observing it. The work takes the form of an immersive four channel sound installation of layered binaural field recordings, accompanied by a series of ceramic panels celebrating the “micro-flora” of the Shetland Isles, magnified to larger than life scale.
The award-winning Ceramic House (Best Open House, Artists Open Houses 2013) has been staging contemporary ceramics exhibitions for the past 7 years, showing work by internationally recognized artists such as Paul Scott, Sandy Brown, Priscilla Mouritzen and Malene Hartmann Rasmussen.
