Jane Palmer

Jane specialises in figurative work, especially portraits and landscapes, often with live models or on location. She enjoys the fluidity, sensuality and physicality of oil paint, but has found charcoal ideal for more loose, expressive portraits, sometimes building up layers to create an archaeology of the human face. Jane’s predominant aim is to capture a likeness, and then to convey a sense of individuality, presence and inner life which is unique to that person. She regularly accepts portrait commissions.

Jane won the Artist of the Year award in 2019 and has exhibited widely. She has been shortlisted for several UK competitions, and has recently shown work at the Mall Galleries, Worthing Museum, Sussex Contemporary, and Star Brewery. She is exhibiting with the Society of Women Artists in June. Jane holds degrees in English and Art History from Kent and Sussex, including a PhD on images of illness which has influenced her interest in portraiture and representations of the female body
