Polish artist Cat-arzyna answers our questions on why she takes part in Christmas Open Houses
Welcome back, Cat-arzyna! How many years have you been taking part in the Open Houses at Christmas now?
This will be my fifth or sixth time of opening my house Cat-arzyna, at 11 St Keyna Avenue, Hove during the Christmas Artists Open House
The first year I didn’t expect too much from it, but I was wrong. I was very pleasantly surprised by the number of people who visited me. People that came to me were very nice and enjoyed the Christmas mood my work and the music created.
As a Polish artist your Open House always has a very beautiful Polish Christmas theme – can you tell us a bit about your influences and inspirations?
My house is inspired by the typical Polish decorations. There’s also a blend of Victorian English, because that’s where I currently live, and Old French as I was always fascinated by France. All my work is infused with a Polish soul as Poland is my homeland.
Christmas is a magical time for me and everyone else. As children, we used to believe in Santa and fairy tales. One day we grow up, open our eyes and the fairy tales and true magic of Christmas is gone. But for me, Christmas magic and stories about princesses, dragons, castles and brave knights never disappeared from my life. In adult life, a castle doesn’t need to have towers. It could simply be your house. Because your house is your kingdom.
What do you most enjoy about taking part in the Christmas Artists Open Houses?
What I enjoy most is sharing my work with other people as that brings me true joy. Many people that come are regular visitors and have become my friends – all are always very welcomed at my house, new visitors just like everyone else. Each year the Christmas festival gives me an opportunity to express myself through my brand new work that I create from my heart. My work includes a variety of different things, from sculptures to Christmas cards.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I want to welcome everyone into my house to buy my new work enjoy a glass of warm mulled wine and the cosy burning fire and Christmas feel.
