Brighton and Hove’s Artists Open Houses festival celebrates 40th Anniversary

Dates announced for May Festival and registration for artists now open.

Weekends in May from May 7

2022 will be a very special year for Brighton and Hove’s Artists Open Houses festival as it celebrates its 40th Anniversary.

Brighton and Hove Artist Open Houses, the originator of the Open House movement, dates back to 1981 when an artist from the Fiveways area of Brighton, Ned Hoskins opened his house to the public to view his work, and that of a group of friends. Other artists in the area followed suit to form the Fiveways Artist Group. In a city full of creatives, the idea proved popular and soon Artist Open Houses sprung up all over the city.

The Artist Open Houses festival is now the largest event of its kind in the UK. Around 200 houses and studio spaces across the city open their doors for the main festival in May and around 60 open during the Christmas festival. Over 2,000 artists and makers share their work and homes each year.

The 2022 May Festival will take place over four weekends in May.

May 7/8, May 14/15, May 21/22 and May 28/29

Registration is now open online, and artists have until February 21 to register for the 2022 Artists Open Houses Festival. Artist registration is now open to every artist’s house, studio, gallery, community centre or venue within the 01273-telephone code area.

If you live outside the 01273 area you can still take part in the festival by becoming a ‘guest artist’ and exhibiting your work in someone else’s house. Simply sign up to the Artists Seeking Houses section on the AOH website. Registration link here: aoh.org.uk/register

Katherine Richards Art Gallery is announced as the 2022 AOH Student Bursary sponsor. Katherine Richards Art Gallery is offering a student bursary as part of the gallery’s sponsorship of AOH.
