Sea Urchin - Enamel on Copper
Romi Shadler Reingold
I use multiple layers of opaque and transparent enamels to bring base copper metal into rich colour and texture. One day I will branch into silver, but for now the deep orange and golden earth tones in copper make the perfect backdrop for my metal sculptures, reliefs and enamel compositions. I work thematically on series such as rock pools, woodland scenes, fossils, cloud formations and planets.Individual firings for the enamels are quick and mercurial, involving much testing. A piece may have up to 15 firings making each of these additional stages time consuming. The opposite is true for my ceramic 'komerebi' sculptures as these have a simple slab build and involve up to 14 hours of intricate design and carving. This allows light to filter through the cylindrical scene and bring them to life with the additional light source that shines from within. All pieces are unique, handmade and hand built.
