The Colours of Lichen is a series of abstract watercolour paintings inspired by the varied colours of lichen in our local area, including photographs and information about the lichens found on walks around Brighton.

Danni Durai Painting

Alongside her work on lichens, Danni is showing some of her earlier colourful abstract watercolours as well as her most recent work.

Open during normal library hours from 24th April to 7th May (closed Bank Holidays).

This abstract watercolour painting is the largest in the series and is inspired by the colours of Xanthoria Parietina from grey to green to lime green to gold to deep gold, almost orange. The organically shaped composition is made up of translucent overlapping shades, denser in the centre and thinner towards the edges.

A watery abstract painting in shades of blue, green and grey, the paint has bloomed evoking the blooms of lichen and the way it grows. The colours are a light bluey, grey-green on top and become dark towards the bottom of the painting.

This abstract watercolour has streaks of bright yellow and orange against a blue watery background of blooming paint. There's a patch of bright yellow on the left that becomes orange and then pink from left to right next to some diagonal strokes across the centre of the painting from top right to bottom left. The painting is bright, watery and dynamic.

If the heavens were painted in shades of blue, purple, pink, orange and yellow, with wtery blooms melding the colours, this is how it would look. The wet on wet effect of the paint looks cloudlike.

This painting is in muted watery tones of blues and greens, with purply shades on the top and at the bottom and a streak of sunset colours across the middle. All the colours bleed into each other and the paint has bloomed randomly, creating an underwater or mystical effect.

This watercolour painting started off in the colours of lichen with pale green at the top and yellow in the centre but then it got taken over with broad brush strokes on top that look like dashes creating a slightly circular rotating movement with piks and cobalt blue to the right of the painting and yellow and orange in the centre with blues and greens dashed over the top.

This large abstract watercolour painting is inspired by the colours of lichen and is in shades of green and grey and yellow. It is lighter at the top and darker on the bottom. The colours are rich with dots and splotches of paint blooming onto the wet paint below, evoking the blooms of lichen found on the pavement and elsewhere.
