An abstract piece with blue, green and copper poles. Working towards ‘Escapades Series’ for a Brooklyn 2018 Show I was really hooked on a loose and nonrepresentational way to work. Maybe it was to do with the fact that I had just gone through a year from hell following the effects of Hurricane Maria on the island of my Birth, Dominica. I guess it was a continuation of the proverbial 'escape'! That said, this painting had been started in 2016 with layers and layers of unresolved paint, so getting back in the Studio almost a year later and pulling it out it, I really, if nothing else just wanted to cover the past and start with something intuitive, give myself space to breathe. I had to agree to let my intuition get up to some mischief, a colour fest… a real spree. and then it started to remind me of Pollock and then Richter. And I really liked it! I liked that each area of the painting gives you a cause for pause… to take in the textures, the layers, the colours, the push and the pull.

Pink and yellow grids with striking streaks of blue and yellow. I often include grids juxtaposed against distilled forms and strong colours and markings. There is an urge to include layers and spaces reflecting maturity, calm and order in a chaotic world. The moments when I reduce the final stages of my painting to these shapes opens up a restorative space. I hope this is evident in the work.

An abstract series of three. Layers of dappled orange and green. God knows, I needed that blessed escape, with no preconceptions at all, just crank out the work until I could do no more. Started as a study for a larger altar piece, how I use my triptychs, that was a plan for a strong base upon which to make further marks but I just got more and more carried away enjoying each of the many many layers that went on, either in washes or impasto. In the end the grids, the circles and spirals of the original dance were concealed, but that’s life isn’t it? I felt this piece just so represented for me the core of creation. A deep immersive affair with the medium in the moment.
